Teaching and Assessing Writing with the 6-Traits is an 8 week online graduate course offered through the University of Wisconsin-Stout, Online Professional Development Program.
The time demands of the course will vary based on your choices. Each week there are a series of assignments. The course is divided into 8 modules. During each module there are a series of activities to be completed on a Monday to Monday basis. This allows participants to either catch up or work ahead on weekends. Some are of the activities are optional - that way you can choose each week just how much time you want to put in. I believe in giving teachers lots of choices! (26 years in K-12 classrooms help me empathize.) Additionally, the course website stays open to you after you've taken the class. This means you can return to browse the materials and the lectures when you need a refresher.
The class is asynchronous - this means participants are free to work (within the weekly module schedule) at their own pace. This is one of the great advantages of online work. Typically, I encourage folks to respond earlier in the week if possible, because they are likely to get more peer feedback. We discuss readings, concepts, and favorite classroom practices. We also practice assessments using online papers. We will work at assessing a variety of student papers a trait at a time.
