Waiting
for the Phone Call
By Ben
"Welcome to
the Missoula play tryouts for Jack and the Beanstalk," said
the man in the weird hat while I was sitting on the floor at Sierra
House Elementary School, "my name is Phillip."
"I am Carla,"
said the girl standing next to Phillip, "let's figure out which
one you will be in our play. Get in order from smallest to tallest."
While I was getting in order I was scared that I might not make
it into the play. I was also scared because this was my first time
trying out for anything. It took about 15 minutes to do that. Phillip
and Carla started at the shortest and asked names and ages and told
use to scream so that she can hear our voices when we expand them
to a higher level. Also so he can listen for loud clear voices.
"Ben, age
12!" I screamed. They wrote that information down. They were done.
"Okay everyone
on your way out give Marcia your phone number so we can call you,"
Carla explained.
That night
I couldn't sleep. I kept waiting for the phone call. It must have
been 12:30 when I finally fell asleep.
The next
morning I had a bowl of cereal and toast.
"Ring, ring,
ring," the phone rang. I darted out of my chair to answer the phone.
"Hello?" I said as the tangy and salty sweat trickled down my face.
"Hi Ben,
it's me, Jared. I was wondering-" I had cut him off.
5 minutes
later, "Ring, ring, ring,"
"Hi, Ben?"
it was Phillip! I could hardly wait for him to tell me if I had
made it or not I felt as if I wouldn't make it and be crushed or
make it and be exasperated. I could hear myself breathing really
hard in the receiver, "You made it. Be at Kingsbury Middle School
at 6:00 p.m. tomorrow.
"Thank you
so much, bye!" I was figuratively jumping for joy. I was so happy
that I almost ran through the entire house screaming, "I made it!"
It goes to show you, when you try your hardest you can accomplish
almost anything.
